Toll road prices increasing from July

Motorists using toll roads will be met with a price increase from July 1, 2023.

Tolls on Tauranga Eastern Link, SH2, and Tauranga Takitimu Drive, SH29, and Auckland's Northern Gateway, SH1, will increase by 20 cents for cars, motorcycles and light commercial vehicles, and by 40 cents for trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles.

"The legislation enabling road tolling in New Zealand allows for tolls to be adjusted annually in line with increases in the Consumer Price Index," says a Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"The changes coming into effect on July 1 are the first increases to tolls in over four years, with the last adjustments made in March 2019.

"Waka Kotahi has kept the toll increases below average CPI over the period since the last increase, while ensuring toll revenues will continue to enable the timely repayment of debt."

The changes are detailed in the table below:

WHY?

Posted on 05-05-2023 17:25 | By waiknot

The cost of these long completed roads has and does not increase due the project’s completion. Vehicular traffic has steadily increased over the years also increased revenue. I can’t see a justification for an increase.

Takitimu street

From city to lakes is worst road in the city. Massive potholes. Continuous road works. Why is is there a toll on a couple of kilometre road anyway? Look at the new 110kph highway from south of Hamilton to south of pokeno; that’s got to be 100km or more for free

Road Tolls

How about they fix the Takitimu road and it's numerous potholes before increasing tolls. The amount of traffic on these roads would makes it hard to believe the road has not been paid for already. There is never any reporting on how much progress has been made on debt replacement. Probably because our tolls are not being used for the purpose they were collected

Joke!

Why? Because we can is not a valid answer! As others have noted. No increase in costs. No maintenance. And a poor road surface due to roadworks for the new northern link. More money grabbing to spend on non related projects. If you really want to be annoyed check out the claim of $15m a year to run the toll plaza.

people are finding it hard now with the cost of living, and now they have to put up tolls, i say to the driving public do not use them, go the old way, we are finding that the original roads are and have become more busy keep it up.

Why use?

To date I have not used any of the local tolls. Why? - Because the process of paying is such a hassle. In Australia, you get a token, load it up with credit and the token is automatically debited whenever you use the toll. Here, the process is too complicated and then you get penalised if you forget. Nah! forget it.

This is an unnecessary increase just because it is expected. We all know the revenue collected has nothing to do with the road it was collected from; you can see that by looking at the road. There is no need for an expensive toll collection system and it should not be so unwieldy. If it were simple and easy to pay the toll, there would be more inclination for people to use the road. Industrial users may HAVE to use it, but the rest of us don't. I'm staying off the toll roads until they improve the actual roads and implement a convenient way to collect the revenue.

Tolls to be abolished in NZ

Why tolls just 2 regions in NZ and nowhere else? The practice is unfair and unjust. We all pay the same petrol taxes and road user charges. Tauranga has 2 of the 3 current tolls in NZ & north of Auckland the other with 1 more being proposed. The recently finished Waikato express way & Transmission Gully are multi billion dollar developments & no toll roads? The latter is near Wellington and the public servants living there wont want to pay but its Wellington who make these one sided rules for NZ. We want our democracy back also so hurry up and drop the tolls and bring back an elected council. We are all tired of this Wellington driven dictatorship. The SH29 toll road is a joke. Full of large pot holes and long queues from one end to the other. https://petitions.parliament.nz/4760610a-b374-4be7-9240-0a9792930115
