Update on Cameron Road construction

Work is continuing on both the Elizabeth Street and Fifteenth Avenue intersection upgrades.

Works at these major intersections involve complex underground works on the cables that power the traffic lights, as well as work on the surrounding streetscaping.

"There are lane closures in place and we ask for your patience while these important upgrades are underway," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

As part of the Elizabeth Street intersection upgrade works there is a left lane closure for southbound traffic from 214 Cameron Road (Pacific Toyota) to the mid-block between Elizabeth Street and First Avenue, as the team carries out this work.

Also, on Elizabeth Street (east), the westbound left lane where traffic turns left into Cameron Road is closed as we work on service investigations and stormwater upgrades. Traffic can still access Cameron Road using the centre lane on Elizabeth Street.

"We expect this work to continue for six weeks - weather dependent."

Works are continuing between Third Avenue and Sixth Avenue, where there is a southbound left lane closure.

"We expect to open Fourth Avenue in the coming days - weather dependent."

Arundel Street and Fifth Avenue are both now entry-only, as the team works on the streetscape upgrades through this section. Traffic will be diverted back to Devonport Road to exit on to Cameron Road via Third Avenue (east) or Sixth Avenue (east).

"We expect these closures to be in place for six weeks."

In the coming weeks, work will get underway on the Seventh Avenue (west) intersection. As part of the final design of Cameron Road, the Seventh Avenue and Cameron Road (west) intersection will be permanently closed to traffic and become a green space cul-de-sac. Cameron Road will still be accessible for traffic from Eighth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

On the western side of Cameron Road, works continue on both the stormwater and wastewater, with left lane closures for northbound traffic in place from Eleventh Avenue to Eight Avenue and for the majority of the journey between Sixth Avenue and Elizabeth Street.

Stormwater works across the Tenth Avenue intersection continue to progress, and we expect this intersection closure to remain in place for five weeks, weather dependent.

Further south on the eastern side of Cameron Road, work to upgrade the Fifteenth Avenue intersection is continuing.

The westbound left lane of Fifteenth Avenue, where traffic turns left on to Cameron Road, is now closed for this upgrade and will remain closed for the duration of this work, which we expect to take six weeks (weather dependent). Traffic can still turn left from Fifteenth Avenue on to Cameron Road using the centre lane.

Work on the intersection upgrade is currently underway at the south-east (Academy Motor Inn) corner. Work will then progress on the remaining three corners, one at a time. The signalised intersection will also be maintained during these works.

Work on the streetscape is continuing between Fifteenth Avenue and Sixteenth Avenue, with the stormwater upgrade progressing through the Sixteenth Avenue intersection, which remains closed. This work continues towards 17th Avenue to the mid-block. There is a southbound left lane closure in this section.

With planting season beginning this month, work will start in the coming weeks with planting and mulching in the new garden beds. The team is looking forward to these gardens taking shape as they will help to complete the look and feel of the streetscape areas.

"Please take care driving through the construction zones and be kind to the Cameron Road Joint Venture team, who are more than happy to help if you need assistance finding your way through the site," says a council spokesperson.

Intersection work:

  • Elizabeth Street (west): there is a northbound left lane closure on Cameron Road from Third Avenue to the Elizabeth Street intersection, Elizabeth Street is still accessible for northbound traffic using the right-hand lane.
  • Elizabeth Street (east): there is a left lane closure for traffic turning left from Elizabeth on to Cameron Road. Traffic can still turn left from Elizabeth Street on to Cameron Road using the centre lane.
  • Third Avenue (west): is exit-only as the team works on the stormwater and streetscape upgrade. We expect the entry to reopen in coming weeks.
  • Fourth Avenue intersection (east): will reopen in the coming days.
  • Arundel Street: is entry only.
  • Fifth Avenue (east): is entry only.
  • Seventh Avenue (west): is closing permanently to traffic in the coming weeks as it becomes a green space cul-de-sac.
  • Tenth Avenue intersection (west): this intersection is closed.
  • Fifteenth Avenue intersection: the left lane that turns from Fifteenth Avenue on to Cameron Road is closed. This closure continues around the corner on to Cameron Road towards 17th Avenue. Traffic can still access Cameron Road from Fifteenth Avenue by using the centre lane.
  • Sixteenth Avenue/Cameron Road (east): is closed. Access to Sixteenth Avenue (east) remains via Devonport Road.

Please note, above works are weather dependent.

So nothing will be happening all week then. More taxpayers money down the toilet.

Ban Mobile Phones During Working Hours

Posted on 01-05-2023 07:44 | By Parkmore

We drove the length of Cameron Road last Friday morning... (Slowly !!) It was appalling to witness the lack of productivity from the workforce... Behind each of the orange barriers stood the so called workers... Very little going on anywhere down the road, Just Hi-viz clad groups standing talking, laughing, gawping into mobile phones, leaning on the barriers staring into space... Little wonder this project is taking so long... And who pays for these hundreds if not thousands of hours spent doing nothing ? The management need a shake up... The inactivity was not concentrated in any one location, but the whole length of the roadworks...

I just cannot see what the planners of Cameron rd are trying to achieve but it sure not showing any improvement and the time they are taking I glad immediately I’m not paying personally for it

Consultants Attitude

I totally agree with Parkmore's comments, it appears to be the normal culture for this project, " spin this job out as long as we can because the funding is never ending, as the Commissioner's haven't a clue, and don't care as to what going on".

How many times

Posted on 01-05-2023 12:27 | By Groj

Over the last 3 to 4 years this section of road has been excavated. Sealed excavated. Sealed. Is this round 4 or 5 of the same piece of road? Wasted time energy and money and the businesses must be suffering. And no one is accountable.

You have to wonder...

Posted on 01-05-2023 16:52 | By morepork

... whether someone is making money (apart from the "workers" who are mostly waiting for something to happen...) by dragging this out. It's hard to believe that it can go on this long and affect so many side streets simultaneously, without the project planning being questioned. Do we just have to expect incompetence? Or is there a deeper, darker, reason for it taking so long?

streetscaping

"work on the surrounding streetscaping" = making flower beds and cycle ways to accommodate very few cyclists and scooter riders, (having to look left and right before entering the shop carparks which WILL be very dangerous.

The update is

that there has been very little or no progress happening along Cameron Road. Where is the accountability from TCC to get these infrastructure projects delivered on time & on budget? TCC has become an extension of this woke government, and one that talks a good game but that has delivered absolutely nothing of any value to anyone. Tauranga ratepayers are paying some of the highest rates in NZ but what are we actually getting back in return? The commissioners have these fanciful ideas for things like new stadiums & museums, but we can't even complete the basic necessity of upgrading Cameron Road quickly, efficiently, on budget & on time. So, tell me why we would trust them to do anything else of any significance based on their track record so far?
