Outages after truck brings down powerlines

UPDATE 4.06pm: Ngatai Road is being re-opened to traffic after a truck brought down powerlines earlier this afternoon.

A SunLive reader says traffic was initially being "turned away" from the scene.

"Ngatai Road has now been re-opened to traffic. Powerlines have been cleared from the road," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

According to PowerCo, the 780 properties impacted are still without power.

Police recieved a report of a vehicle "hitting a powerpole" on Ngatai Road, Bellevue at about 3.15pm, according to a police spokesperson.

"There are no reports of injuries," says the police spokesperson.

EARLIER 3.34pm: About 780 properties are without power after a truck brought down powerlines near Otūmoetai Intermediate on Ngatai Road.

"The road is closed until further notice," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"Use an alternate route."

A SunLive reader at the scene says a fire truck is blocking the road, and traffic is being turned away from the area.

"There's one fire truck and a couple of police cars here," says the reader.

A PowerCo outage map shows the whereabouts of the properties impacted.

... for the promised multi billion dollar investment into the network that would allow alternate routing and prevent outages like this... (sound of crickets and tumbleweeds in a ghost town...)
