A horse is dead following a crash on State Highway 2, near Waihi.

Emergency services were called to the crash, near Rifle Range Road, around 6.30am.

A police spokesperson says the crash involves a vehicle and a horse on Sh2, between Rifle Range Road and Dean Crescent.

"The horse died and was blocking one lane, though a farmer is organising a tractor to move it."
