UPDATE 7.15pm: State Highway 2 at Taneatua is reopen following an earlier crash.

"The bridge has been assessed by contractors and has been deemed safe for traffic," says a police spokesperson.

"Motorists are still asked to drive with care."

Earlier 6.19pm: State Highway 2 at Taneatua is closed, following a crash.

A police spokesperson says a "single-vehicle" hit a bridge.

"It happened about 5.45pm on the Whakatane River Bridge, White Pine Bush Road," says the police spokesperson.

"There are no injuries, however, the road will be closed while contractors access the bridge.

"Motorists are asked to take alternate routes."
