A health warning has been issued for Kopurererua Stream in Tauranga.
Routine water test results have found high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria.
'The health warning means that people should avoid swimming in the stream water,” says Dr Lynne Lane, Medical Officer of Health for Toi Te Ora Public Health.
E. coli is a type of bacteria commonly found in the guts of warm-blooded mammals (including people) and birds.
'In water used for swimming and other recreation, too much faecal contamination can cause gastroenteritis or infections of ears, eyes, nasal cavity, skin, and the upper respiratory tract,” says Dr Lane.
Regular sampling of the stream water will continue and any changes in advice will be communicated accordingly.

Warning Not Listened To
Posted on 09-03-2023 23:07 | By Yadick
During the big storm my dear Wife and I went down to the Village from the hospital to have a look. I rang and warned TCC of toilet paper etc floating in the flood waters by the skateboard park. They did not at all, in any way seem particularly concerned. She came across as not believing me.

The fact is that there is little anyone could do about it. (I guess they could have aired a warning, but then they would have to do it for all the streams in the area and people are not planning on going swimming immediately after a serious flood...) We have to let Nature take its course and the flood has to flush itself clean. I like the idea of you and your wife walking in the area; it is very pretty down there... :-)
