9.30pm Update: Emergency services are responding to a single vehicle crash on State Highway 5 at Ngongotaha.

Police say the crash occurred at about 8pm.

"There are no road blockages," says a police spokesperson.

"At least one person has been taken to hospital."

Earlier, 9.10pm:

State Highway 5 near Western Road is closed following a crash.

A Waka Kotahi spokesperson says to take extra care in the area.

"Expect delays."

Westbound traffic can detour by turning left onto SH36, then left onto Oturoa Road, then right onto SH5.

Eastbound traffic may follow this detour in reverse.

"Detour is not available for heavy vehicles."

The spokesperson says the road will be closed "until further notice".
