UPDATE 4.04pm: State Highway 2, near the intersection of Turner Road, is now reopen following a fatal crash.

The road was closed at about 11.40am this morning, according to Waka Kotahi.

Earlier 11.41AM: State Highway 2 is closed following a serious crash.

Emergency services were notified of the single-vehicle crash at about 10.55am.

Initial indications suggest one person has sustained injuries.

Diversions are in place at Wainui South Road and Esdaile Road.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Diversions: Light vehicles only. Northbound traffic: left to Esdaile Rd, then right to Wainui South Rd. Southbound in reverse. No detour is available for heavy vehicles.

EARLIER:

Traffic delays are being reported on State Highway 2.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic is backing up on SH2, near Apata Station Road.

"It looks like there is a crash on the road and it might be shut down.

"People should avoid the area if possible or expect delays."
