There are several cross-overs in Labour MP Iain Lees-Galloway's portfolio's as defence, military, transport and mental health and addictions spokesman.
And he involved nearly all of them on his visit to Tauranga on Thursday during his ‘talking to people on the front lines' visit.
Labour MP Iain Lees-Galloway's meets with Tauranga RSA members Bob Swale, Ray Terrill, and Dick Frew.
The long awaited review of the War Pensions Act was the discussion topic at the Tauranga RSA during a lunchtime briefing.
The process was initiated by the previous Labour Government with a review and substantial report produced on the Act now being in the hands of the Government with no action for the last three years, says Iain.
The Law Commission's report 'A New Support Scheme for Veterans: A Report on the Review of the War Pensions Act 1954' was published on 1 June 2010.
The report makes recommendations for new legislation to replace the War Pensions Act 1954.
One of the aims of the project was to make the Act easier to administer and more accessible and readily understood by those affected by it.
The proposed legislation would replace a complex and outdated scheme with a modern system of decision-making and assistance that maintains the Government's duty of care towards veterans.
It will also address some inequities that have developed over time, says Iain.
While the Tauranga RSA appears in good health compared to some, Iain says the government's cut to welfare funding is affecting the ability of RSA welfare officers to get about the community and see to the welfare of members and their dependants.
He was also speaking with the Tauranga City Council about transport issues, and finishing the day with a call on the Western Bay of Plenty Mental Health Trust.
