Fire trucks are returning to the scene of a car and shelterbelt fire in Te Puke after a flare up.

"We got the call at about 7.30am," says Fire Emergency NZ shift manager Peter Stevenson.

An abandoned car on Young Road was found to be on fire, with the fire also spreading to a nearby orchard shelterbelt.

"Fire appliances from Te Puke and Maketu responded to it and extinguished the fire to the car which was on Young Road,' says Peter.

"It looks as thought it's been a stolen car and abandoned, and either set fire to, or caught fire and caused the shelter belt to catch fire.

"The shelterbelt has the car in the middle of it.

"Because there were no plates on the car we've advised police."

Police say they were made aware of a vehicle on fire at Young Road at 7.20am.

Peter says that around midday the public noticed some hot spots and called fire services again.

"We've gone back to a flare up and putting out hot spots this afternoon."

The fire was seen from as far away as Papamoa Hills and State Highway 2 near Arataki.
