Motorists on State Highway 1 in Tongariro National Park at Taupo should expect delays following a crash earlier this afternoon.

Initial indications suggest two vehicles collided near Tree Trunk Gorge Road, says a police spokesperson.

"Emergency services were notified about 1.40pm.

"Eight people are understood to have been involved and at least one person has serious injuries.

"Traffic management is in place but there are delays while emergency services work at the scene and clear debris.

"Drivers are urged to take care."
