One person has died following a crash in the Bay of Plenty.

A police spokesperson says the crash happened on St John Street in Ōpōtiki this afternoon.

"Police were advised at 1.15pm that a car had collided with a fence.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway.

"Initial inquiries indicate that the crash is the result of a medical event."
