UPDATE: State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge is reported to now be open.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency earlier reported the road to be closed following a serious crash on the highway between Opotiki and Gisborne.

The road was closed to allow emergency services to work the scene.

The roading agency reports SH2 is now open.

EARLIER:

Emergency services are responding to a serious vehicle crash which has resulted in the closure of State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge.

Due to the crash the section of SH2 between Opotiki and Gisborne is closed.

The crash is located about one kilometre southwest of Opotiki.

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise motorists to allow extra time for a short detour while emergency services conduct an investigation.

It is unknown at this stage if there are any injuries.

It is also unknown how long the highway will remained closed for.
