A police spokesperson says the road was down to one lane for a time with traffic control until the vehicle was towed.

EARLIER:

A caller to SunLive says that a ute has crashed into a bank on State Highway 36.

'It's about 800 metres back from the Rotorua end of State Highway 36, before the turn off to Hamurana," says the caller.

'The ute's crashed into the bank while heading in the Rotorua direction. It must have happened about ten minutes before I got there, about 5.45pm.

'Police are arriving there now.

'There don't seem to be anyone injured. They are out of the Ute walking around. But the Ute looks really munted.

'I think they'll have to probably close down one lane of traffic while they get the Ute out.”

SunLive has approached police for comment.
