State Highway 33 in the Bay of Plenty is now open.

The road was closed earlier today following a fatal crash near Old Coach Road.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash at 3.10am.

A police spokesperson has confirmed that one person is dead and another has been seriously injured.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reporting that the highway is now open.

"Following an earlier serious crash SH33, has now fully reopened," says a Waka Kotahi spoksperson.

"Thank you for your patience."
