UPDATE 6.30AM: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious single-vehicle crash on State Highway 33, Paengaroa.

Police were called about 3.10am.

"The road currently remains closed, and no suitable diversions are available in the immediate vicinity," says a police spokesperson.

"Police ask motorists to avoid the area and delay travel, if possible."

State Highway 33 in the Bay of Plenty is reported to be closed following a serious crash.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reporting a serious crash on the highway, south of Allport Road.

"Due to a serious crash, SH33 is closed between Maniatutu Road and Old Coach Road.

"Allow extra time for a detour as emergency services conduct an investigation."
