Motorists are advised to expect delays in Matatā following a serious crash.

"It happened between two vehicles on State Highway 2 West, near Herepuru Road, shortly after 1.30pm," says a police spokesperson.

"One person is reported to have serious injuries.

"Traffic is currently down to one lane but may be closed for periods of time as officers work at the scene."

According to Google Maps, traffic is moving slowly in the area.
