An earthquake and aftershocks have been felt near Taupō, after a magnitude 5.6 quake occurred just before midnight last night.
The earthquake struck 15km south-west of Taupō, at a depth of 5km.
Thousands of people reported feeling the quake on GeoNet.
Taupō had a strong shake with several aftershocks this evening – a shallow M5.3 was felt widely by 5000+ people at 11:47 PM. Earthquakes are common for this area at VAL1. They included one of 3.9 just before 5am, one of almost 30 aftershocks in the hours following the 5.4 quake.
