Update: State Highway 29 is now open following a crash between a car and a truck, shortly after 1pm.

2.45pm update: Due to a serious crash, State Highway 29 is closed between SH1 and Totman Rd. near Karapiro. A detour is in place.

Police were notified of a crash, involving a car and a truck, shortly after 1pm.

Initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.

"Allow extra time for the detour," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

Westbound traffic: From SH29 turn left onto Totman Rd, right onto SH27, right onto SH1.

Eastbound traffic: From SH1 turn onto SH27, left onto Totman Rd, right onto SH29.

Earlier, 1.45pm Police are responding to a serious crash on State Highway 29, at Karapiro.

Motorists are asked to please avoid the area or take an alternate route.

Waka Kotahi NZTA says that due to the serious crash, SH29 is closed between SH1 Piarere and SH27 Hinuera.

A detour is in place. For Westbound traffic, turn left onto SH27, then right onto SH1. For Eastbound traffic, the reverse of the above directions applies.
