Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious crash on SH29, Karapiro, where a vehicle has struck a tree.

A Waka Kotahi/NZTA spokesperson says SH29 between SH1 and Totman Road is closed.

"Follow directions of emergency services on scene and allow extra time for a detour," says the spokesperson.

A police spokesperson says police were called to the scene at about 7.10pm.

"Initial indications are that there have been serious injuries," says a police spokesperson.

"The road is closed, with diversions in place, and the Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene.

"Please avoid the area if possible."
