One person is dead following a crash in the Bay of Plenty.

Police were called to Paerata Ridge Road about 3.45pm after a car and a dirt bike collided in Opotiki on Monday.

"One person sadly died at the scene," says a police spokesperson.

"The Serious Crash Unit has examined the scene and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing."
