A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE hotline says traffic is "absolutely diabolical" following a crash on SH2, near the Wairoa River Bridge.

"I'm heading North and I can see a ute has gone down the bank," says the caller.

"There's a few pick up trucks here. The traffic is really bad."

According to Google Maps, traffic is moving slowly in the area.
