More than 170 people from across the North Island will attend a seminar specifically designed for secondary school technology teachers this weekend.
The Combined Technology Seminar will take place today at Otumoetai College.
President of the NZ Graphics and Technology Association and Otumoetai College teacher Kevin Meyer and food technology teacher Lauren Atkin are helping to host the seminar – which aims to give guidance and direction to technology teachers after the Government's recent hints at removing technology teachers from the intermediate school system.
The day will cover digital media, materials technology, design and visual communication, graphics and food technology.
There will also be heavy duty programmable robots, 3D printers and other innovations in operation on the day.
Otumoetai College spokesperson Erin Armstrong says technology has become a fractured subject with the curriculum changes over the years.
'This kind of cohesion is unheard of between other subjects. It is an opportunity for the teachers to gain wonderful guidance and direction. In light of the Government's recent hint at doing away with tech teachers in the intermediate system it is a valuable seminar.
'All those in attendance are doing so in their own time and are not being paid to attend.”

I thought courses these days were all about self-esteem, basket weaving, photography and birthright. This technology course makes a refreshing change and eventually will equip our students well.
