State Highway 2 at Waiotahe Beach remains closed today.
A slip come down blocking the highway, between Ōpōtiki and Whakatāne, on Wednesday afternoon.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency says further material has come down overnight.
'The road remains closed today between Waiotahi Valley Back Road and Paerata Ridge Road,” says a spokesperson for the roading agency.
'Geotechnical investigation is being undertaken today and following this assessment there will be more clarity regarding when access will be restored to State Highway 2.
'Light vehicles will continue to be detoured via Waiotahi Valley Road, Waiotahi Valley Back Road, Verrall Road and Paerata Ridge Road until further notice.”
All heavy vehicles are unable to use the detour route, and must instead utilise routes via State Highway 5, says the agency.
'Waka Kotahi appreciates that this road closure will be disruptive, and work to restore access will proceed as quickly as possible.
'A further update will be provided by the end of the day.”
