UPDATE 7.37AM: State Highway 2, near Matata, is reported to be open.

The Bay of Plenty highway was closed between Herepuru Road and Arawa Street overnight following a fatal crash, involving two vehicles.

A police spokesperson has confirmed that one person has died and another was taken to Whakatane Hospital to be "treated for non-life threatening injuries".

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports that the highway is now open.

State Highway 2, near Matata, remains closed this morning following a fatal crash.

Emergency services were called to the crash, involving two vehicles, around 10pm on Thursday.

A police spokesperson has confirmed that one person has died and another was taken to Whakatane Hospital to be "treated for non-life threatening injuries".

Police say the road is expected to reopen shortly.
