Police advise that State Highway 2 West near Matata is closed while emergency services respond to a crash involving two vehicles.

"Initial indications are that there are serious injuries," says a police spokesperson.

"Diversions will be put in place."

Waka Kotahi NZTA have also advised that due to the serious crash, SH2 is closed and motorists need to follow the direction of emergency services at the scene.

"[There is} no detour available. Avoid the area or delay your journey if possible.

Motorists are advised to expect delays.
