UPDATE 12.52PM: One person has died following a serious crash in Matamata.

The crash, involving a car and a train, occurred at the railway tracks on SH27, shortly before 10am, says a police spokesperson.

"SH27 remains closed, near Puketutu Road.

"Motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area."

Police are responding to a serious crash south of Matamata.

The crash occurred on State Highway 27, near the intersection of Puketutu Road and Hinuera Road, says a police spokesperson.

"SH27, near the intersection, has been closed and traffic management is being put in place.

"The northern diversion for motorists will be at Firth Street and Hinuera Road and the southern diversion will be at Hopkins Road and Hinuera Road.

"Motorists are asked to please avoid the area while emergency services attend."
