Fatal crash: Highway remains closed

Motorists are advised to avoid the highway.

UPDATE 8.18AM: One person has died following a crash on State Highway 1, near Cambridge.

The crash, which involved a truck and a van, occurred at around 4:53am, near Hickey Road.

"One person was located dead at the scene," says a police spokesperson.

"A second person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"SH1 remains closed and traffic management is in place.

"We thank motorists for their patience while emergency services attend and work to clear the scene."

EARLIER:

State Highway 1, near Cambridge, is closed this morning sa emergency services deal with a serious crash.

A police spokesperson says they were called to the crash, near Hickey Road, at 4.53am.

"SH1 is closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice."

Diversions are in place and are as follows:

Northbound traffic turns left onto Maungatautari Rd, straight through to Browning St, right onto Shakespeare St, left onto Achilles St, right onto Albert St, left onto Queen St, then right on to Victoria St, then re-join onto SH1.

Reverse for southbound traffic.

Heavy vehicles use SH29 and SH27.

Under National, the Auckland to Cambridge expressway was going to continue to Piarere, State 29 turn off. Labour abolished the plans, and did some cheap improvements. The result, continuously high death toll. Even the State 29 turn off has become a death trap. The Road to Zero confidence in this Government

Yes as soon as the came into office five years ago Labour cancelled the continued progress on this dangerous part of this road. . At the same time they cancelled Tauranga's northern link to connect Omokoroa with a four lane highway and a proper interchange for Omokoroa. Then spend millions on peurile TV advertising to road to Zero. In this case sadly the opposite affect by their policy
