A slip and a crash have resulted in State Highway 5 being closed.

A slip has blocked part of State Highway 5 at Ngongotahā, north of Rotorua.

Police were called about 6.25pm.

"The northbound lane is blocked to traffic between Paradise Valley Rd and Western Rd, and diversions are being put in place," says a police spokesperson.

Due to a crash, SH5 is closed from Western Rd to the roundabout intersection of SH36.

"Avoid the area if possible or follow directions of emergency services and expect delays."

Motorist are advised to follow directions of emergency services.
