One person has died following a crash on State Highway 1 in the Bay of Plenty Police District.

Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Korohe Road, Turangi, at 6.40pm.

"Police can confirm one person has died following the serious crash," says a police spoksperson.

Police reported that the road was still closed at 10.41pm while staff work at the scene.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reports the highway is now open.

"Police thank motorists for their patience."
