Driver caught doing dangerous passing move on SH29

A truck driver filmed the moment a motorist drives into incoming traffic in a dangerous passing manoeuvre.

Police are looking for the driver, which truck driver Warren Gaiger filmed on Tuesday, September 20, at 11.25am.

The video shows Gaiger heading in the direction of Tauranga, going uphill.

Ahead of him is a logging truck, while two consecutive trucks and trailers are coming towards him, heading in the direction of Waikato in a single lane.

As Gaiger gets closer to the trucks a dark-coloured SUV pulls into Gaiger's lane, heading straight for him in the inside lane, beside the logging truck.

You can hear the truck driver's stunned expletive-loaded reaction as he sees the vehicle. As it nears Gaiger it crosses further over into the outside lane on the wrong side of the road.

Gaiger couldn't comment on the incident, but police said they had received a report of dangerous driving on SH29 near Matamata.

A police spokesperson says they are following strong lines of enquiry to locate the driver of the offending vehicle.

Police say they are appalled at the disregard some motorists show for the safety of other road-users.

Police urge motorists not to attempt risky overtaking manoeuvres when they don't have sufficient space to complete it safely.

'If you've witnessed dangerous driving please make a report to police, including registration plate number and make or colour of the vehicle, so that we can conduct follow-up enquiries and hold offending drivers accountable for their actions.”

That driver should be behind bars for no less a crime than "Attempted Murder"!

Stupidity... but

if that dangerous SUV can go down the inside passing lane (so obviously no cars in it), why is the truck in the outside passing lane ? Sick of seeing trucks (& cars too) doing this. If the inside lane is clear, pull over. Maybe the cops should be discussing that with the truckie !

MORON!

This idiot, when caught should be going straight to prison and banned for many years. His life to me, is worthless, but Its the other innocent drivers that he could kill if he continues driving like that.

So long as there are people on the roads there will be accidents on the roads, so long as there are accidents on the roads there will be death on the roads, so long as there are people on the roads there will be idiots on the roads and so long as there are people, idiots and accidents on the road, Road To Zero is nothing more than pie in the sky snd a total waste of money and time. Even one death is not zero. Accidents happen and bloody idiots are out there.

Take a closer look guys and read the article before jumping to conclusions. The SUV was completely on the wrong side of the road heading into oncoming traffic. This vehicle was being piloted by a Kamikaze!

If you go onto the NZ Herald site and play the actual footage you'll see clearly that the trickiest are not to blame in any way and were not actually in the outside lane but in fact taking evasive action so they didn't have to live with the knowledge of killing this absolute moron. Justin T is correct.
