The serious crash unit is investigating after a fatal crash in Cambridge.

At 3.39am, a vehicle has crashed into the back of an ambulance on Tirau Road.

The driver of the vehicle has sadly died at the scene, says a police spokesperson.

"The driver of the ambulance is in a critical condition and has been taken to Waikato Hospital.

"There were no patients onboard but there was another medical staff member inside the vehicle who has non-life threatening injuries.

"The road is expected to be closed for some time and diversions are in place."

I made a recommendation to St John a couple of years ago, that they follow the UK, and have highly conspicuous Orange/Yellow diagonal tape across the back doors. Unfortunately I can't display an image, but the purpose is to prevent this type of accident. I got met with cold shoulders. Maybe it time to review.
