A drive along the waterfront of Waitui Reserve near Te Puna has left two vehicles in a muddy situation.

Photos sent to SunLive show two 4WDs stuck in the mud this afternoon.

The caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the vehicle was driving along the front of the reserve when it became embedded up to the midway point on its tyres.

"The driver has had to call someone to come tow it out.

"It's an outgoing tide and heavy rain has been falling in the area."

It appears a second vehicle was attempting to tow the first one out, and has now become stuck as well, according to photos sent to SunLive.

According to the Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Reserves and Facilities Bylaw 2018, a person shall not park or drive any vehicle (excluding bicycles), motorcycle, or land yacht on any part of the beach, except with prior written permission of the council or an authorised person.

Exceptions may be made for vehicles solely used for the purpose of launching or retrieving a vessel. Read more about bylaws here.

A tow truck from Rowe Motors has been called to assist with pulling the vehicles out. Photo: Supplied.
