Emergency services are on their way to a truck and trailer unit that has caught fire in the Waioeka Gorge.
"Police have been notified of a truck and trailer unit on fire on Waioeka Road around 7.30pm," says a police spokesperson.
"Emergency services are en route to the scene."
Police say there are no reports of any injuries or a crash.
A SunLive reader driving to Gisborne through the Waioeka Gorge came across the scene at about 7,45pm.
"The truck unit looked like it had detached itself from the trailer unit which was well ablaze," says the SunLive reader.
"Emergency services hadn't got to the scene at the time. I rang 111 by which stage they'd already received some reports of the fire and I understand the fire crews were motoring from Opotiki.
"It was a pretty dramatic blaze but it was on the shoulder of the side of the road where there was enough space for traffic to get by."
He says the location of the fire is about 20km north of Matawai, heading towards Opotiki.
"The driver's truck looked unscathed and the driver had parked about 50 metres away from the fire and had his hazards lights on to let people know something was up as a warning sign.
"It would be intriguing to know how the trailer caught ablaze or if there were inflammable cargo on board."
