One person is dead following a crash near Whitianga.

Emergency services responded to a two-vehicle crash on Tairua Whitianga Road (SH25), Kaimarama, at 9.05pm.

Initial reports were that there were serious injuries, but police have confirmed this morning that one person died after the crash.

The road was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit time to examine the scene.

It was re-opened around 4.30am.

"Enquries into the crash are ongoing," says a police spokesperson.

Anyone with information about the crash can contact their nearest police station.
