Mount Maunganui firefighters were busy overnight dealing with a power box fire in the Papamoa area.
The brigade responded to the call around 8.30pm outside a Hartford Avenue property in the Papamoa Beach area.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith says a power box on the street caught fire.
This is the fourth reported power box fire in the last three months.
Earlier in July firefighters were called to a smoking power box on Ocean Beach Road and an exploding power box on the corner of Grenada and Monowai Streets created a show for residents in June.

Aging

I commented once before - it is an aging process according to a line worker. My question is what is Trustpower/Powerco going to do about it? Wait until they all go off or someone gets badly hurt or killed? In the meantime, DO NOT SIT ON THEM, just in case....!

TrustPower does not own or operate transformers. They are owned, maintained and operated by the network company, in this case Powerco. As somebody with electrical qualifications however, I do know that transformers have a life expectancy significantly longer than those that have failed recently. I suggest anyone with concerns contact Powerco, but respectfully point out that going around replacing things that are still well within their life expectancy just because they might fail is a bit like putting new tyres on your car, to replace tyres that are half worn, just in case they go flat. At the end of the day, that sort of behaviour only leads to one thing - higher costs for the end user(s), in this case, consumers. I also point out that these transformers have signage on them warning people to keep clear, so sitting on one would be rather foolhardy to say the least.
