Multiple slips and flooding across Coromandel

Update, 8.30AM State Highways and council roads are cut in locations across the Coromandel on Tuesday morning, after Monday's heavy rainfall and high winds, says a Thames-Coromandel District Council spokesperson.

On many roads that are open, there is debris and surface flooding.

"Our Council's Emergency Management Unit is advising people to avoid travel until further notice and fresh updates can be provided," says a Thames-Coromandel District Council spokesperson.

Thames-Coromandel District Council roads:

Tapu Coroglen Rd - Closed due to a large slip blocking the road 9km from Tapu (near the Square Kauri). Traffic management and road clearing will take place today. Expected reopening is 4pm today.

The 309 Rd - Closed due to a large slip blocking the road approximately 5km from the State Highway 25 intersection (Coromandel Town end just past The Waterworks). Traffic management will remain in place until a crew can establish this morning (Tuesday). Expected reopening 4pm today.

Hikuai Settlement Rd - Closed at each end. Two sets of powerlines down. Temporary traffic management will remain in place until it is safe to carry out work to open the road first thing this morning (Tuesday). Expected reopening 4pm today.

Kennedy Bay Rd: Open to one lane. A crew will return in the morning (Tuesday) to clear the remaining debris that came down with the tree.

Coromandel State Highways:

SH25 is closed in several locations:

  • Coromandel Town to Te Rerenga - slip
  • Kūaotunu to Wharekaho - slip
  • Hikuai (Tairua River) - flooding
  • Waihi-Whiritoa - multiple slips
  • Waka Kotahi/NZTA is saying SH25A (Kōpū-Hikuai Rd has reopened after being closed overnight but remains under traffic management at multiple locations. Take extra care.
  • A comment on our Council's Facebook page suggests SH25 just south of Tapu (Thames Coast Rd) is blocked by a slip.

Due to a slip just south of Tapu, SH25 between Thames and Coromandel is blocked with Stop/Go traffic management in place. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time.

Due to flooding SH25 is closed between Hikuai Settlement Road and Tairua. The road is being monitored and will remain closed until water levels recede. Motorists are advised to avoid this area and delay travel. Only trucks and 4WD vehicles may consider crossing currently, at their own risk. No detour is available.

Due to multiple slips, SH25A between Kopu and Hikuai is open under traffic management, however may need to be closed for short periods today, Tuesday July 26 subject to further slip activity. Motorists are advised to please avoid this route or take extra care and allow extra time for all journeys.

Due to multiple slips SH25 is closed between Waihi and Whiritoa. Response crews are hopeful of reopening the road by early afternoon today, Tuesday July 26. Motorists are advised to please delay travel and avoid the area.

Due to a large slip, SH25 is closed between Kuaotunu and Wharekaho and is expected to be closed for some time today, Tuesday July 26. Motorists are advised to please avoid the area and delay travel.

Earlier, 7.02AM: Multiple slips and flooding in the Coromandel peninsula have resulted in highways being closed overnight.

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise that State Highway 25 between Waihi to Whiritoa is closed due to multiple slips between Waihi and Whiritoa.

State Highway 25A was closed but is now open to one lane following a slip between Paeroa and. Kopu. Motorists are advised to drive with caution in the area.

State Highway 25A between Kopu and Hikuai is closed about 2km south of Hikuai due to multiple slips. Motorists are advised to delay their journeys or avoid the area.

State Highway 25 between Waihi and Whangamata was closed due to a slip but is now open to one lane. The slip is one kilometre south of Whiritoa. Motorists are advised to drive with cuation in the area.

Due to flooding SH25 is closed between 303 Rd and Whitianga. The road is being monitored and will remain closed until water recedes. The flooding is about 3km west of Whitianga. No detour available. Motorists are advised to avoid the area or delay their journey if possible.

There are also two road closures in the Bay of Plenty and one in Waikato.

State Highway 33 between Rotorua and Paengaroa is closed due to a slip on the road. Waka Kotahi NZTA advise motorists that the road is likely to be closed all day. The slip is between Allport Road at Paengaroa and Hamurana Rd at Okere Falls. Detours are State Highway 2, State Highway 29A, and State Highway 36.

Due to a washout SH35 is closed east of the Motu River Bridge. A temporary single lane track will be opened to light vehicles only (weather permitting) between 5pm and 8pm each day as significant repair work continues. Due to ongoing road movement caused by recent wet weather, SH30 north of the Kopaki Bridge is closed to all traffic until 7am Wednesday July27 for road repairs.
