UPDATE 1.55pm: Police have retrieved a man by boat who was reported to be mired in the estuary mud and mangroves in Welcome Bay.

An ambulance is going to meet the rescue boat at Asher Road.

EARLIER: 1.10pm: Police received a report at 12.25pm that a man is "stuck" in the mangroves and unable to get to land.

The location is described as around 100 metres from the urupā at the tip of Ngapeke Road in Welcome Bay.

"Police have spoken to the Harbour Master and Surf Life Saving to explore options for retrieving the man," says a Police spokesperson.
