UPDATE 12.03PM: Police can confirm one person has died following the serious crash on SH1, Wairakei, earlier this morning.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene, says a police spokesperson.

"Diversions are in place.

"Motorists should continue to avoid the area."

EARLIER:

Emergency services are attending the scene of a two-vehicle crash on SH1, between SH5 and Centennial Drive, Wairakei, Taupō.

"Police were called about 9.50am," says a police spokesperson.

"Initial indications are there have been serious injuries.

"The road is closed, with diversions in place.

"Motorists should avoid the area if possible."
