Highway closed due to fallen tree

State Highway 25 is closed due to a fallen tree, as severe weather moves across the country.

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency says a fallen tree is blocking SH25 (Thames Coast Rd) in both directions near Windy Point.

"Follow directions of emergency services and expect delays until clear."

Several severe weather warnings and watches are in place around New Zealand as heavy rain, snow and strongs winds lash the country.

There is currently a heavy rain warning in place for the Bay of Plenty, along with a severe weather watch.

A weather watch is also in force for the Coromandel area.

"A large trough of low pressure is expected to move across New Zealand today, then move northwards on Saturday," says a MetService spokesperson.

"This weather system is forecast to bring strong to gale north to northwest winds, and further heavy rain to western and northern parts of both islands.

"People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case some changes are made or more areas are added."
