State Highway 29 is open again following a serious crash which forced emergency services to close the highway earlier today.

Emergency services were called to the crash on SH29, southwest of Matamata, at 7.50am.

Two rescue helicopters, TECT Rescue Helicopter and the Waikato Westpac Rescue, were also called to the crash involving a truck and a car, says a spokesperson for the Philips Search and Rescue Trust.

'The truck driver was flown to Waikato Hospital by the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter in critical condition.

'The other driver was extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to Waikato Hospital by the TECT Rescue Helicopter.”

The highway was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit to examine the scene.

It has since opened and motorists are being urged to be patient as traffic congestion in the area clears.
