10.15am update: A serious crash has closed State Highway 2 between East Bank Rd and Pacific Coast Highway in Matata.

"At 5.15am Police received a report of a crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Matata Road - SH2, just south of Caverhill Road," says a Police spokesperson.

Detours are in place.

Westbound traffic turn right onto East Bank Rd, then onto Pacific Coast Hwy - Thornton Rd/Arawa St - then continue onto SH2. Reverse for eastbound traffic.

Earlier, 6.45am: There has been a crash on State Highway 2 between Matata and Awakeri.

A serious incident on SH2 has been reported to emergency services.

"At 5.15am Police received a report of a crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Matata Road - SH2, just south of Caverhill Road," says a Police spokesperson.

"The road is partially blocked and under traffic management while emergency services attend. One person has been transported to hospital with serious injuries. Serious Crash Unit have been advised."

NZTA Waka Kotahi advise that SH2 is closed between Pacific Coast Highway and SH34.

"Please delay your journey or use an alternative route," says an NZTA spokesperson.

Motorist are advised that there is an alternative westbound route by turning right onto East Bank Rd, left onto Thornton Road and then continue onto SH2. Eastbound traffic to take the reverse route.

"Follow the detour and expect some delays."
