Associate Minister of Education Kelvin Davis has announced 51 education resources that will help bring Mātauranga Māori to life.

'Matariki is our first uniquely te ao Māori public holiday and is a time for us to remember the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. Matariki also provides ākonga (students) with a gateway into mātauranga Māori and tikanga Māori,” says Davis.

'These resources will directly impact the identity, language and culture of our ākonga.”

The curriculum resources created include activity cards, books - including eBooks, journals, apps, waiata, rotarota, videos, posters, teaching and learning programmes, and Maramataka.
'These new teaching and learning resources will ensure kaiako (teachers) are not left to navigate the teaching of Matariki alone,” says Davis.

Resources were developed by Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga - The Ministry of Education - in collaboration with Dr Rangi Mātāmua and the Matariki Advisory Group, with other materials developed to align with iwi or hapū mātauranga.

'It is important to give our ākonga, kaiako and whānau a range of opportunities to learn about and personalise their Matariki learning experience,” says Davis.

The resources focus on the themes of honouring the past, present, and future, with emphasis on observing how ākonga fit into the natural world and their environmental responsibilities.

Resources will be provided to kōhanga reo, early learning services, schools and kura for both Māori Medium and English Medium pathways from June 6 2022. Twenty-seven of the new resources will be distributed to 6,757 learning sites prior to the inaugural Matariki public holiday on June 24.

The online resources will be available on the education portal Kauwhata Reo from June 1 2022.

New Zealand going backwards

This focus on Maori science is ludicrous, because there is no such thing. Science has no ethnicity, which is why people don't talk about 'english science' or american science, or chinese science. Science is universal. Just as 1+1 =2 in Australia, the same is true in New Zealand. For one race to claim that their facts differ is quite wrong.

Disgraceful political decision making again.

We should hang our heads in shame for not having a national celebration of the Queens Jubilee this year and then commence the annual Matariki day off from next year. Absolutely disgraceful and I wouldn't blame the British for cancelling all future trade agreements and boycotting the nation.

That truancy numbers significantly ad reading writing and maths are also significantly improved. Of course an extra holiday is good for votes but not for businesses costs and feeding inflation and the already poor proxy to pay for everything. The suggestion to replace Queens Birthday was a good one for several reasons but of course not a vote catcher.

Sham celebration

Time to admit that Matariki is a sham. It was introduced in response to the realisation among modern Maori that they were the only race that did not have an annual event to mark the beginning of a new year. And as fractured isolated tribes without a national identity, how could they?
