Power outages and flooding

There are power outages in Papamoa and Waihi, as well as surface water flooding in Karangahake Gorge.

NZTA Waka Kotahi are advising motorists to drive with caution on State Highway 2 in Karangahake Gorge due to excess surface water or flooding in the area.

Powerco are reporting a power outage in Waihi with 338 properties affected. The power went out at 5.34am and is estimated to be restored by 9.45am.

A SunLive reader is reporting a power cut in Papamoa at about 6.40am with Papamoa Beach Road properties affected. It is unknown at this stage how wide spread this power outage is.

At Mount Maunganui, there has been some storm damage on Mount Mainstreet with some shop signage and tree branches down.

Earlier, 843 properties in Hahei, Coromandel had a power cut at 4.32am. Although initially the estimated restoration time was 8.45am, Powerco is reporting that power has now been restored to these properties.

MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Warning the Bay of Plenty including Rotorua for the period from 3am Monday 30 May to midnight Monday 30 May.

"Expect 120 to 180 mm of rain to accumulate, with the largest accumulations likely about the ranges," says a MetService spokesperson.

"Peak rates of 25 to 40mm per hour possible in thunderstorms from late Monday morning."

Heavy rain may cause streams and river to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
