Update 5.12pm: The road has now reopened following a serious crash on State Highway 2, Whakamarama near Francis Road.

"One person has been transported to hospital in serious condition," says a police spokesperson.

"The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is still ongoing."

Parts of State Highway 2, near Francis Road in Whakamarama, are closed due to a serious crash.

A police spokesperson says the initial indications suggest there are serious injuries.

"The Road will be closed for some time and diversions are being put in place on Esdale Road and Wainui South Road," says the police spokesperson.

"The diversion route is not suitable for heavy motor vehicles who are advised to use an alternate route.

"The Serious Crash Unit has been advised."
