A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead at a Tauranga property just after 10.30pm on Saturday night.

Police were initially called to a disorder incident involving a group of people at the residential address on Maungatapu Road.

"Upon arrival, Police located the body, says Detective Senior Sergeant John Wilson.

"Police believe those involved in the disorder incident were known to each other."

On Sunday morning, residents have been gathering outside their homes on Maungatapu Road.

"There are a lot of families across the road, wrapped in blankets standing there," says a SunLive reporter.

"There are lots of Police there, and there are members of the armed offenders squad still there too.

"A couple of the armed offenders left in a car and went around to State Highway 29A where the property backs on to. My guess is they will be needing to protect the property from both ends."

Police say that scene examinations will continue at two Maungatapu Road properties today.

"Residents in the Maungatapu area will notice an increased Police presence in the coming days while enquiries are ongoing," says Detective Senior Sergeant John Wilson.

No arrests have been made at this time.
