A large, controlled vegetation fire in the hill around Ohauiti is expected to burn for the next few hours.
A number of concerned residents have contacted SunLive reporting seeing the flames coming from the fire.
One person says the fire “has been going a lot of the day in the hills”.
Another reported seeing it from Otumoetai.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Josh Pennefather says firefighters attended the fire overnight and it is nothing to be concerned about.
“It is a large pile of forestry slash being burned. The local fire manager is aware of it and the land owner has all the required permits.”
Forestry slash is usually coarse and fine woody debris generated during logging operations or through wind, snow or other natural forest disturbances.
It can create an fire hazard if left unattended.
Josh says fires like this are used as part of land management control.
He says the fire is expected to burn for possibly another 24 hours.
