One person has died at the scene following a crash on State Highway 27 near Matamata on Saturday morning.

Another person is in a serious condition and has been taken to hospital.

Police were notified of the crash at 7.56am. Emergency services attended the scene, and diversions were put in place at SH27/Cussen Road and SH27/Ngarua Road.

The road was closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene.

Police say that the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
