UPDATE 8.23AM: Diversions are in place after a train collided with a car this morning in Maketu, Bay of Plenty.

A police spokesperson says the crash occurred at 7.15am.

"Nobody was injured.

"Motorists are asked to follow the diversions that have been put in place through Maketu township."

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of a train and car crash near Maketu this morning.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the crash has happned on the railway tracks on Maketu Road, near Te Puke Highway.

"It looks like everyone is out of the car. Emergency services are at the scene.

"Traffic is backed up. People should expect delays."
