SH2 reopens under stop/go after truck roll

UPDATE: 4.30PM: Waka Kotahi NZTA is now advising that State Highway 2 north of Katikati has reopened udner traffic management.

A stop/go system is in place following a truck and trailer rolling on the road, blocking it, this morning.

The stretch of SH2 between between Lindemann Road and Philip Walter Drive is now under stop/go system.

"Allow extra time for delays in this area," reads a bulletin from NZTA.

PREVIOUSLY 6.53AM: Motorists are being warned of significant delays north of Katikati.

A truck and trailer has crashed on State Highway 2 north of Katikati near Lindemann Rd.

"The road is blocked in both directions," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"Emergency services are on scene treating an injured person.

"At this point, a crane is likely required to clear the crashed truck and trailer from the road.

"Significant delays are likely.

"

A police spokesperson says a truck and trailer unit has rolled.

"One person is reported to have moderate injuries.

"The road is blocked and will remain closed until it can be removed.

"Diversions are in place."

Diversions are as follows:

Southbound: Use SH2 via Waihi to Paeroa, SH26 & SH27 (via Matamata), SH29 (via Kaimai Ranges) to Tauranga.

Northbound in reverse.

EARLIER:

Reports are coming in of a truck crash on State Highway 2, north of Katikati.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says she has just come into the township and had past a few emergency services appliances heading out.

"Something is going on out here, it looks serious."

Waka Kotahi Transport Agency reports there is a truck crash on SH2, near Lindermann Road.

"A truck crash near Lindemann Rd, just north of Katikati, has been reported to emergency services. Delay your journey or expect delays."

Commercial vehicles

This is just another arguement in support of a tunnel through the Kaimai range. It would take a significant amount of commercial vehicles off the present overloaded road network in and out of Tauranga.
